The most important parts of keeping your ultrasound endocavity transducer, or ‘probe’, ready for use is cleaning, disinfection and proper storage. Some might think the terms cleaning and disinfection are synonymous but for making sure your patients and probes are safe, it is a two-phase process, the first of which we’ll outline here. Proper cleaning of the probe will ensure the disinfection process is effective and efficient.
The Center for Disease Control defines cleaning as “the removal of foreign material (e.g., soil and organic material) from objects and is normally accomplished using water with detergents or enzymatic products. Thorough cleaning is required before high-level disinfection and sterilization because inorganic and organic materials that remain on the surfaces of instruments interfere with the effectiveness of these processes.”
A good checklist for probe cleaning;
Remove the probe cover.
Wipe it down with an enzymatic product to remove organic and inorganic soil.
Disconnect the probe from the ultrasound system.
Clean the probe by using a soft cloth with non-abrasive detergent.
Rinse the probe body only (plastic part) with tap water.
Dry with a cloth or air dry.
Inspect the entire transducer to confirm that it is clean.
The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services suggests you follow manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning, visually inspect the probe for residual soil and re-clean as needed before high-level disinfection.
Note that even when using an automated reprocessor, cleaning is still required before the disinfection process. According to the CDC “cleaning residual organic or inorganic matter left on the probe increases the margin of safety and shortens the exposure time required to kill the entire microbial load.” Along with that, leftover transducer gel may hinder the high-level disinfectant and inhibit the potency of reusable disinfectant.
Once the cleaning cycle is complete, your ultrasound endocavity probe is ready for high-level disinfection.
